Gembrook Retreat is a 22 acre property on the border of Wurundjeri Woiwurrung and Boonwurrung/Bunurong Country. It is currently owned by a trust set up by Maggie Dunkle, a Quaker woman, in 2000. Maggie believed that the property should be made available for all to experience spiritual renewal through connection with the land. We recognise and value the ongoing deep knowledge, care and spiritual connection of the traditional owners to this Country, and we warmly invite all Aboriginal people to visit and stay with us. We seek to listen and learn from Aboriginal people in order to understand and address the impacts of colonisation in our own mindset and practices. Jane, Steve and Samara are members of the Christian/Quaker residential community who live onsite at the Black Cockatoo House of Welcome and Blue Tongue House in Gembrook. We take care of the day to day running of Gembrook Retreat, welcoming guests and looking after the guest spaces and the land. She works as a Spiritual Director, Retreat Guide, Mentor and facilitator of The Work That Reconnects. She has found that her spiritual life has deepened by developing a greater connection to land, extended periods of contemplation and living a daily life of prayer and work. As her spiritual life continues to deepen everyday she is drawn to share and explore the spiritual life with others. After spending two years in Brazil, learning from Indigenous communities as well as local Brazilian families, she has spent the last 20 years committed to building residential communities in Australia. She helped begin the Indigenous Hospitality House in 2001 and was a resident there for 3 years, before moving to Gembrook Retreat. Jane refers to her work under the banner of Rewilding Christianity and describes her spiritual life as a wild adventure story that just keeps getting wilder. This first experience was profound. Transforming hopelessness into passion and inspiring him to speak up and act for a non-human world in crisis. He comes to Active Hope work with a decade of facilitation and community work experience. Over that period he has facilitated workshops with over 5000 people, primarily drawing upon Rites of Passage frameworks. Most of this work has been through preventative mental health and emotional intelligence organisations The Man Cave and The Intersection. In these roles he has also conducted extensive program and workshop design as well as facilitation training and development. She can't get enough! She says that this work offers an everyday attitude that is both gentle and practical. Applicable and essential to counteracting the late stage effects of Capitalism. Shannon lived in the community at Gembrook Retreat from 2021 -2024. She continues to be involved with Active Hope work at Gembrook Retreat after moving to Tasmania in 2025. Shannon has traveled the world and lived in many climates, cultures and communities. She is passionate about gender equity, consent, peace building and truth telling. Gembrook Retreat is a 22 acre property on the border of Wurundjeri Woiwurrung and Boonwurrung/Bunurong Country. It is a religious trust set up by Margret Dunkle, a Quaker woman, in 2000. Maggie believed that the property should be made available for all to experience spiritual renewal through connection with the land. Jane, Steve and Samara are members of the Christian/Quaker residential community who live onsite or nearby in Gembrook. We take care of the day to day running of Gembrook Retreat, welcoming individuals, couples and small groups to use our retreat spaces and looking after the land.
